Rodolfo Estrada's Interview

1. What is your full name?
Rodolfo Estrada

2. Where are you from?
Los Angeles, CA

3. Where did you go to college? For how long? Do you plan to go back to school?
I went to Stanford University for my BA; the University of California, Hastings College of the Law for my JD; and Columbia University, Teachers College for a Masters. In total, I went to school for 9 years. I probably will not go back, but maybe one day I’ll go back for a doctorate at Stanford.

4. (If the interviewee went to college)…What was your major in college and what kind of degree do you earn?
I got a BA in History.

5. Why did you choose that field?
I really wanted to learn about history and the major really allowed me to study material that I found interesting like ethnic studies in America.

6. What got you involved in this field of work? What inspired you to do it?
I work on language access. I think having parents who are immigrants and limited English proficient has inspired me.

7. Why did you choose this job?
It seemed like a good place to work and it would allow me to work on an issue I believed in.

8. How long have you worked here?
I’m going on 7 months.

9. What is your job title?
Associate.

10. What do your duties include? Or What kinds of work does your job involve?
I’m largely working on one national project that is looking at best practices and models for serving limited English proficient individuals.

11. What are some of the challenges you have faced working here?
I didn’t know too much about policing structures so I had to learn a lot quickly.

12. What is the best part of your job?
I get to travel a lot and I have good co-workers.

13. What is something you would like to change about your job?
I am often in the office and I would like to be out in the field more.

14. Did you work somewhere else before this job? Where? For how long? How was that similar/different?
I used to work at an educational nonprofit doing policy and legal representation. The policy work was also pertaining to language access, but I was technically an attorney at my old job.

15. What do you see as your future with this company?
I’m not sure a lot depends on where my project leads me.

16. Do you enjoy the kind of work you do?
Yes, I need to enjoy it or else I wouldn’t do it.

17. Do you plan to open your own business one day?
No, though I have some friends who are interested in opening a law firm.

18. How has having an intern helped your company or organization advance or progress?
It’s been helpful to get a different perspective on issues we see everyday.

19. What advice would you give to high school-aged interns (such as myself) getting ready for college and then the real world?
Make sure you have fun in college: study abroad, learn a new language, do things that you might not be able to do later on in life.

Hey!!!
I haven't write much because I haven't work with computers too much.
However, I've being doing a lot of intersting stuff around my site.
Like today, (guess what??)
I just came out of this meeting I had with two police officers, one was a detective Leslie Leon and the other was a sergeant Lizbeth Villafane.
Talking to them was so much fun. They both shared their experiences on their particular jobs. They also told me how things sort of work in the NYPD, and the benefits it offers to be part of it. I see it as "my dream just came trues"--> me talking one on one with officers from a PD :P
Yee I'm very happy and somethin' else I would like to add is to THANXZ my MeNtOr Susan Shah ((a very good friend of Ms Aarti))

Oh yee b4 i forget "ALWAYS KEEP YA MIND OPEN" ((something the officers adviced me))
Okay besides that I'm still working on finding information on different agencies in the nation, that later will be visited by my mentor Susan and co-worker Rodolfo

Okay I'm going to go back to "w0rK" =P

Hey
I was not suppose to go to my internship site, and I did not.
However, I had to make up the hours I lost lasst week ((I was sick and missed a day))
I stayed at the school helping Ms Aarti organize her classroom
I put up monologues and poems up in the wall

After that I photo copied the lessons she taught during the whole year, and handed to Mr Michael
I also helped Ms Carol fixing things.

I worked from 12:00 to 3:00
It was fun and co0l working at the school

*Daily Post* 04-16-08

Hey...

Today I got there late because the L train got stuck in 1st Avenue and it didn't m0ove til 30 minutes later.

Today I got to work with the facility department... However, they didn't have anything for me to do therfore Susan and I went over the reports I'd send her (about the video and the courses)
She gave me sugestions about how to improve my grammar.
After I was done with that, I helped MIchael ((the other intern)) write down some boxes names and bar codes. There was one box that was not label so we had to open it and tried to find any type of important information. The box was full of files in Russian therefor we DID NOT understand
lolz
After that I satyed at the storage and talked for a little while. Then I put some files in order. After Dahavan told me the dish washer machine was not working well therefor he assigned me to wash the wine cups ((that were used in a confernce)). Michael helped me do so. he washed them and I dryed them and put them away.

That was all he said he had for me so, I went back to Susan and I had to read some articles about NYPD recruitmen, but my computer didn't allowme open it because guest system doesn't offer many programs.
I killed time till five and left.

Childhood In Translation

Many immigrant families depend on the children, for translation and interpretation. This issue happens when the adults in the family don’t know much English and need to communicate with people that doesn’t speak their native language. This commonly happens during important meetings, doctor appointments, and parent conferences. That’s the example of the documentary Childhood in Translation shows.
This documentary filmed by Robert C. Winn demonstrates a young Hispanic girl interpreting both her teacher and parent’s perspectives about her school progress during a parent conference. The narrator and also educator Phyllis Chambers-Emmons explains the difficulties of children who are exposed to interpret. She mentions that when children have to interpret it takes them away from childhood and it brings them to adulthood, because the child converts into a reporting source and not a child anymore. Chambers says that this can be a psychological problem for the child because his/her role changes. This can sometimes lead to misunderstandings to the child, which could lead to yelling and disrespecting the child. The educator clarifies that the parent is been ignored and margined because the whole conversation is been through the child.
In this documentary the girl is interviewed and she says that she likes interpreting because it would help her later on in a future job. Another adult lady also shares her experience when she had to translate what the teacher was saying in parent conferences. She says that she felt a negative power because her parents where depending on her help. That is commonly felt among the ones that have the responsibility of translating.
Issue like this one can be handling, but many parents place many obstacles in front of them to not learn the language. In other words it is much easier to depend on the children instead of valuing for themselves.

Hey...
Today I worked with Susan ((she got a c0ol hair cut))
She was not at her office when I got there, so (NO, I didn't stay there doing
N0tHiNG) instead I continued doing what I was doing lAst Thursday, [Filing]
Before I was done with it, Rodolfo (the co-worker i work with on Tuesdays) asked me to please finish the agencies rrsearch.
I did as I was told, and when I was don with that I went back and worked with Susan, again. I was scanning some papers that needed to be sent to her e-mail. By the time I was done it was 4:00 pm (around)
My mentor had to go to a meeting theterfore I wasn't going to see her anymore, so she told me to write a report on two courses russian Studies and Anthropology Studies offered at John Jay College Of Criminal Jstice. That took me less then the hour but I proof read it and e-mailed it to her. Then I left.

Midpoint Reflection Questions

How has the internship been the same as and/or different than your expectations?
It was different of what I thought before I had the interview. I tought I was going to have the chance of working with police officers. However, I am learning related things to police departments.

What is similar and different about the culture of the school environment versus the workplace environment? What new skills have you learned that apply to the workplace?
The environment at school is more warm then in the site. At Vera the are all quiet, and are most of the time on their office doing their job. The new skill I learnde at my intership is work independently.

What kind of relationship do you have with your mentor and co-workers? How have you grown as a result of interacting with professional adults?
I have a good relationship with my mentor and co-worker. I still don't feel really comfortable talkin to them, but it's easy to communicate about work related things.

What challenges at the internship have you faced that you have overcome and how did you overcome them?
To overcome the silence. It is boring (especially now I don't have a mp3 player)
I guess I got used to it.

What challenges have you faced in school as a result of the altered schedule and how are you handling them?
I think most of us are facing a challenge is "managing our time" It is hard to do our school assignments. I get home at 6 and sometimes I don't have time to do anything because I go straight to sleep.

What goals are you working to accomplish during the remainder of the internship?
I really want to learn and actually get a little involve with police officers.

What new things have you learned about New York City?
I learn that there is many people that worry about the community. For example Vera worries about immigrants rights. I is very cool that people worry about the ones that feel less supported

*Daily Post* 04-02-08

Today is wednesday, the last day of this week at internship, and it was fun. I am a person who like doing things such as hand work (instead of research)
so today I went donwstairs and drop some outgoing mail into the mail box on the street. That was fun (especially because I couldn't fine the post mail blue box) lol
After I did that I put some FedEx folders in order and label them. I waited for coulpe of minutes til my mentor returned. When he came back he told me to work with the other intern and organize the copy room. Michael (the intern) and I talked while we did what we were asked and finished quickly. Then we had to get some supplys for a confernce that is happening tomorrow. After that we had to put the tables and chairs from the main conference room inside the closets. My mentor helped us in this. After that I went home. =)

*Daily Post* 04-01-08

Finally we are in April. lol
Today, I was told to make final correction on my Memo [on Tuesdays I work with Rodolfo -who assigned me the Memo)
He gave me a list of agency names. There were 25 agencies out of 200 ((the 200's I organized last week) My job was to find the home page of the 25 police departments and try to search for anything related to immigrants, and translations.
I had to save the websites into a folder name after the agency's name.
I only did 7 agencies. It's very hard to find that information. I guess I'll finish searching next tuesday =(

*Daily Post* 03-31-08

I did not go to Vera. My mentor is out of the state, she is assisting to some conference in Hawaii and Baltimore and won't be back til the end of this week. therefore, I stayed at school doing the work she assigned me and also helpin the IHS staff (Ms Carol & Mr Carlos)
I helped Ms Carol by making copies of some sheets.
I helped Mr Carlos putting stamps on envelopes that were been send out.

It was super cool working at school, it's very easy [that's why]
=p

I entered 15 minutes early to my inernship-site, therefore I had to wait til 1:00 to start my daily assignments. I used a computer while I waited, which was used for personal reazons. A little bit after 1:00 my mentor explained me the receptionist's responsibilities, if in case one day they'll need my help. The most specific part was answering the phone. That was scary, so many bottons to press. However, my mentor gave me details of their functions. He also explained whichwere the necessary numbers to press when a call enters, and also how to connect them with the person they want to talk. At the end it seemed simple. After that I put a pile of payment sheets in order depending on the companies' names (vendor)
That was quick. After that I had to look over 5 boxes and try to find where they belonged to. To accomplish that I had to go over the files inside the boxes. I took a little bit longer on this one. Then, I explained my mentor what I had found. After a brake I helped my mentor accomodate the main confernce room of the institue, for a special meeting. When we were done we talked about the conference room, and many other things related to Vera.

*Daily Post* 03-25-08 ((Congrats Clau)) =)

Today, I had to organize a big pile of surveys from law enforcemnt agencies nationwide. There abaout 180 surveys and I had to put it in the order a list showed me to. It was hard because some of the surveys were missing. I had to start from the midlle (which made it more complicated it), but i finished that like in 1 hour or so. After that i started making corrections on a MEMO I wrote about a website call "SpanishOnPatrol"
I had to follow my mentor's coments to imropve it, however he said it was pretty nice for a first draft. Now I know how to write MEMOS =)
After that I started working on my Daily Posts, and it's almost 5:00 therefore, I'm about to go home YEE...

*Daily Post* 03-24-08

On Monday i had to go trhough a binder about an organization from the NYPD. The main points were;
"New Immigrant Outreach Unit"---Which is this new plan to engage and build confort to police officers and new immigrant communities.

"Righs and Responsibilities When Interacting with a Police Officer"---That was a brochure of what the public should know when is stop by an official.

"Civilian Obserber Ride-Along Program"
---This talked about many programs for the ones who care about the community.
After that i had to look at the NYC patrol officers guide and try to find if tere were any policies that was realated to immigrants. The book was 1430 pages long and of course i didn't had to go through it entirely, but it was ver fustrating to find something on that heavy book. When I was done with that Ms. Artie came to visit my site and asked me questions about the environment. It was very nice having her there because she got to see what I do and where I do it.
I probably spent 1 hour with her and then it was almos 5:00 so my mentor gave me more assignments for the following week (she will be absent. I went home watched TV and went to sleep at 3:00am =)

*Daily Post* 03-19-08

That day I worked with the facility department. I had to go find for avaliable phone numbers in the floor for future employers. First I went into a room where i had to manage an "old system computer" and find the numbers I thought that were avaliable. The way I notice they were disoccupied was by looking at the name, and if it was confusing that meant it was free. I had to go through from the numbers 500 to 1400's. I got less than 30 suspiciois numbers. After that i had to get details about each number and out of the 30 numbers only ten were correct. I spent like 30 minutes on that. My second assignment was to look into a box and try to find out where it belonged to. The facility membeers are responsible of the boxes that come in and out, and on Wed. two boxes arrived without any name. So I had to read the stuff that was inside, and tell my supervisor Dagvhan if I notice something. Fortunally I did and the boxes were handed in. This assignment seemed very unclear and I didn't know where to start, but I finished it in 15 minutes. The last thing I did was helped making binders for an upcoming presentation. The binder contain aprox 30 pages and i had to put it together. I left my site around 5:30 because there were 65 binders to make and I think it would not have been appropiate and respectful to leave at 5:00pm. That was an exhausted day, but I had fun when I got home. (lol)

New Paltz

Last Tuesday, most of the juniors at IHS went to a trip to New Paltz SUNY. We departed at 7:00 am and it took us about 2 hrs and 30 min to get there. Many of us slep until we anxiouslly waited to arrive there. The first thing we did was walk to the Lecture Hall and listened important facts about New Paltz.
We learned about the background of the college and three different ways to get into New Paltz. Out of te three ways of getting into New Platz the one that interested me the most was the Education Oportunity Program (EOP), which consists on giving extra support to the ones who have the knowledge and enthusiams to get into New Paltz but don't have all the requirenments the admission asks for.
This was a important point which made me think that they worry for the students, and not just for population on the school. After that we were introduced to students who later took us to a trip around the campus. In the tour they gave us details about the buldings, and environmet. They also responded to all of the questions we had.
At the end of the day we went to the cafeteria, which for one of us was the most excited part. The food was delicious. After that we headed to Brooklyn, in which many including myself slept, again. =)
Waking up at 5:40 am was worth it, even though i thought i was not going to be able to wake up that early, but I made it. I ended up tired, but i don't regret going to New Paltz. I hope we keep having fun trips as this one and the one in Philadelphia.
I would like to say Thanks all my wonderful teachers for making my highschool's years one of the mosts.

Third Week Assignment

Describe one significant activity or project that you have completed or are working on currently.

I have permformed many small projects such as working on excel doing different things on each department. However, the project I'm working on right now is researching about what was done after the Hurricane Katrina and how many law enforcement agencies responded to Limited English Proficient (LEP). My role is to read the head lines of an article posted by the Asian American Justice Center and write a report. I'm currently working on it, and it has to be ready by Monday, which is the day when I work with the supervisor who assigned it to me. I really enjoy this project because it helps me learn of what law enforcements and other help sources did about LEP, and how they didn't ignore them.

Second Week Assignment part 2

What did you do during your second week?
They set me a schedule, in wich I started working with different supervisors in different departments.

How was it different than the first week?
The second week was different because more responsability was put on my hands. Assignments were a little bit more difficult, but I could still handle.

What is something that you really like about the internship?
The thing that I like the most about my internship site is that I work with different people and learn different positions at
Vera Institute, such as the faculty department, and the immigration department.

What is something you dislike about the internship?
My internship is fine. It isn't too hard neighter too easy.

Who else's blog have your read and commented on?
I've read and comment Gbriela and Katrina's blog

What happened on the first day?
I got there, Susan gave me a tour and then I started reading about her project [mentioned above]

What kinds things have you done so far?
I've helped them find the locations of police departments and law enforcement agencies nationwide to see where the "Translating Justice within Law Enforcement Best Practices Accessment Survey" was sent, and see where the rsponses have come from.

What were some of the highlights of the first week? (Memorable moments, cool things...)
I learned interesting information about police officers. =)

When do you leave school?
